2013 has been an exceptional journey in exploring barbell manipulation. I would say the majority of the coaches I had the pleasure of spending time with along with my personal coaching influences in the USA have all taught what we consider a classic “S” pull in weightlifting where the bar trajectory sweeps in and out before looping overhead or onto the shoulders.

With the introduction of modern Russian technique, the big emphasis was on a much more linear bar path where any horizontal deviation would be considered less desirable. Our very own resident coach of the USOTC seems to be on board with this line of thought as well.

Now before you go thinking that “we’re doing it all wrong,” I employ you to consider that our eyes have simply been opened to something different and worth evaluating. I’ve been playing around with this straighter style of pull for the last 6 weeks and let me be the first to tell you, having a straight first pull? No problem. Keeping that bar path ram rod straight after the second pull? Now that is something else all together. Is it more efficient? In theory. But you are what you practice; and whether it’s “S” pull, “I” pull or some combination of the two, as long as you are making your lifts and looking fluid, you are heading down the right direction and hopefully having some fun along the way.
