As a community, we have all evolved to be very savvy. We strive to learn and assimilate as much information as possible. And let’s be honest, learning curves of new athletes coming through the doors are so much faster with all the great resources available these days.
One of the things we used to correct often on new athletes is the inconsistency of the receiving position becoming too wide as loads increased. They would then fail only because they couldn’t middle split any wider. Today, I find myself having to correct that fault less and less. The pendulum has swung the other direction and now athletes have fallen into habit of not moving their feet at all in fear of “going too wide”. And although the results are better than the former situation, proper feet relocation is still the desired result.
Allowing the feet to move from a good starting position to a good receiving position offers the following benefits:
1. A larger, more stable, base of support.
2. Provides space to allow the hips to sit through smoothly.
3. Increases the speed of the athlete reversing direction against the bar.
4. Allows the athlete, when they land, to create better stability upstream for the rest of the structure.
5. BONUS: If you try moving your feet and suddenly you’re doing weird things like jumping forward etc., you have just illuminated some weaknesses that are now calling for your attention.
