Will Rawlings of @CrossFitSAA performing both a no contact (Russian variation) and contact (Chinese variation) muscle snatch and discusses the value of this movement.

Muscle Snatch:

An accessory exercise for the snatch.

Speed is a more important characteristic for the snatch than the clean A lifter is required to achieve more height in the snatch in order to fix the bar overhead, so the magnitude of the initial impulse off the floor, trajectory, and acceleration of the barbell is key.

This aids in general development of the internal & external rotators of the shoulders, back, and legs for powerful extension.

Reinforces the speed and straight trajectory of the pull for snatch, and is a great warmup tool when combined with overhead squats to prepare for snatch work.
