With the CrossFit Open just right around the corner, are you starting to think about your strategy? If we’re talking about competition, it comes down to gaming for points/time. And one of the areas all athletes lose points/time is not having smooth transition positions.
When the transitions are rushed, inconsistent, and sloppy, it all leads to the athlete into having an inconsistent movement pattern. This inconsistent movement pattern reduces efficiency and can cause an onset of early fatigue slowing the athlete down.
An easy way to remedy this problem is to spend more time in each transition. By marking these positions (even pausing for 3-5 seconds at each receiving point), you build familiarity and awareness so that these points become automatic (think “muscle memory”) when you introduce speed on top of metabolic demand.
So the next time you practice barbell cycling (if you don’t, I think you should), find a rhythm you can settle into and get after this low hanging fruit. Oh, and don’t forget the little guys when you win The Games. ✌️
