Squatting is a metric used by weightlifters to gauge lifting potential. Anytime the leg strength goes up, usually the snatch/clean&jerk isn’t too far behind before starting to make a rise.

But since this game is weightlifting and not powerlifting, to focus too much attention on increasing squatting potential could also pull down the snatch/clean&jerk numbers.

Mason Tuller age 10. Mason’s been practicing the Olympic lifts on a weekly basis with me since he was 8. Why 8? Well, that was about the time his dad came to me and we started exploring the idea of how we could help Mason develop some movement patterns that he can carry over to his other sporting endeavors.

The base of Mason’s program in the beginning looked something like this:

General development:

1x per week -

CrossFit

Another weekend, another city! Hung out today at Kaizen CrossFit with a fun and welcoming community. Thanks to all the folks that came out today to listen to me babble about weightlifting. It’s always a privilege to be able to share what I know.

Overhead squats are often used within the strength & conditioning community as a functional movement screen to flesh out and illuminate physical limitations and asymmetries.

To learn more about what could be going on with your overhead squat, check out:

We had a large response from last week’s post on the split snatch/clean from athletes interested in trying out this variation of movement. Here’s a video demonstrating the footwork involved in pulling under the bar.

Points of consideration:

1. The first and second pull are the same.

2. The third pull is essentially like your split jerk but with a longer and deeper base.

3. Because of the longer base, the split is also more forgiving of potential form errors.

Our first platform was rescued house siding that had been abandoned for recycle and held together by duct tape. It wasn’t much, but it was ours.

Fun highlight from the weekend: Rachel Lim at 135lbs/61kg BW setting a lifetime PR clean&jerk at 183lbs/83kg. Not bad at all if I do say so myself.

Position is king in weightlifting. Being shifted forward or back just one degree will have a direct result on where that bar will go. An observation as I work with many newly initiated weightlifters is the body’s unawareness of how to navigate to key points of the pull consistently making for equally inconsistent bar paths and often frustrating practice sessions.
